#mumbossmondays with Social Media Manager, Helen Martin

When did you start your business & why?

I started my business in April after finishing a Diploma in Social Media Management with Digital Mums. However I only really started to get more serious about it in September this year, having got the Summer holidays out of the way! I previously worked as a corporate lawyer, but had had a long career break with 3 kids. Going back into a corporate role was never going to work for me due to my eldest son being disabled – but also I didn’t really want to go back to what I was doing before! I spent some time agonising over what to do with myself once my youngest started school, but then I found out about Digital Mums, and decided to take the plunge and do something completely different!

What’s been the highlight of running your own business so far?

The highlight of running my business so far – there has been a few! Getting my first client, getting lovely testimonials, and of course sending out my first invoice! It’s important to celebrate the small wins as well as the big things though. It sometimes it feels like there is a long way to go, but if I look back a year ago and consider how far I have come, that is a big win in itself!

How do you organise your time?

Organising my time is something I need to get better at – at the moment I work mostly while the kids are in school but also end up doing extra in the evenings and weekends. I really want to try and be more focused during the daytime hours – but it’s very hard to do when working at home as there are so many distractions (laundry, washing up, tidying, etc etc) which get in the way. The school day sounds like it should be a long time but actually it goes incredibly quickly!

What’s the biggest life lesson you want to pass down to your children?

To follow what you love and not to just settle for something because it seems the easy option. The things that are worth doing often take a lot of hard work. It is often tempting in the short term to avoid them and follow the route of least resistance, but in the long run you will appreciate putting the effort in to achieve what you really want.

What do you wish you had more time for?

I wish I had more time for: reading, yoga, and exercise! Taking time for myself is the thing that gives and I really need to create a bit more balance – I am hoping this will get easier as I get more used to running my own business and fall into more of a routine.

What’s does your ‘mum uniform’ comprise of?

Breton top and jeans! I can’t resist a stripey top – really need to branch out a bit more…..
