Happy Monday everyone! This week I’m catching up with Ruby, mum to two gorgeous twins based in Bexleyheath, makeup artist and owner of Madeup by Ruby.
When did you start your business & why?
I initially started my hair and makeup business back in 2013. I realised my passion for hair and makeup after my best friend asked me to do her wedding makeup. After that I took a course and was on my way. Initially it was difficult to get started but with the help of a friend from Uni who was already an established MUA I was able to assist her with some of her bigger wedding bookings, TV bookings and she even had me help her assist with some high profile Bollywood singers performing at Wembley arena, I will always be grateful to her for the springboard she gave me.
This gave me the confidence to push myself to take on bridal bookings myself. I then got married and had twin babies so I took a break from the hair and makeup to focus on married life and raising the twins. Now that they are 18 months old, I feel I can get stuck back into the business. As it’s such a passion of mine, its like a break from the busy everyday life of being a mummy to my amazing kids, wife to my super supportive husband and working in a very busy recruitment role 5 days a week.
What’s been the highlight of running your own business so far?
For me the highlight is being given the privilege of making up a bride on her special day. You are generally the first person that she will have that couple of hours of quiet with. It’s a huge responsibility to maintain a calm and relaxed environment for her to relax before her busy day ahead.
How do you organise your time?
I am very lucky to have a lot of support from friends and family. My husband has been instrumental in pushing me forward into restarting the business since I had the twins. He is a very hands on daddy which make it easier for me to take on bookings.
What’s the biggest life lesson you want to pass down to your children?
I will always encourage my children to pursue their dreams. I fully believe that of you are passionate about something enough you will do amazing in that field. I believe you have to work hard and stick with it even if it feels like its not going your way, the hard work will always pay off.
What do you wish you had more time for?
I wish I had more time for my family. We do spend as much family time together as we can but in an ideal world, I would want more hours in the day to play with them and watch them grow as it’s going by so fast.
What’s does your ‘mum uniform’ comprise of?
As a Makeup artist I do strive to have a full face of makeup on if I’m out and about, if I don’t have time I always make sure I wear concealer and mascara ( I love Charlotte Tillbury full fat lashes mascara). I’m still not back into my skinny Levi jeans (still holding on to them in hope that one day I’ll miraculously get back into them with no exercise). I generally wear my stretchy New look jeans or leggings with long tops and oversized cardigans. Trainers are my new best friend! High heels are no longer a reality in my life. I recently chopped my hair into a bob as the mum bun was looking tired and I was fed up!
