When did you start your blog & why?

I Started the blog, Wander & Luxe, in 2016 when I was in-between jobs and had commenced a travel journalism course.  I had no idea what I was doing and shortly after started a fabulous career opportunity.  During 2016 I also fell pregnant and decided to move from Australia to the UK for my husband’s work.  Needless to say, I was very busy and didn’t have any time for the blog.  I revamped the blog in 2018 as opposed to looking for a corporate role and have been working to build the blog ever since.  I like the flexibility it provides with a hectic home life and busy travel schedule.  I also love the possibility that the sky is the limit – I just have to dream it!

What’s been the highlight of running your own business so far?

The biggest highlight has come just recently – I have been shortlisted for an award with Tots 100 in the category Favorite Family Travel Influencer.  I have been working really hard to produce great content for my audience and brands, so it is very rewarding to be recognized.  The competition is tough with some brilliant and very successful bloggers also being shortlisted in my category, so it is an honor to even have my name alongside theirs.

How do you organise your time?

My daughter is at nursery 3 days a week which is my strict working time.  During the other 2 days of the week, I try to sneak in a couple of hours of work during her nap time.  In the evenings or on weekends I might spend a little more time promoting the blog on social media.  However we all need some downtime and I think it is very important for our mental health.  So you may just find that I go completely MIA over the weekend or whilst I am on holidays.

What’s the biggest life lesson you want to pass down to your children?

That’s a tough one!  There are so many and I could probably write multiple blogs about it.
However, the first things that springs to mind are that I want her to be resilient and I want her to always have a sense of adventure.  I was 20 weeks pregnant when we relocated to England and whilst there have been lots of challenges, the opportunities and experiences that we have had as a family have been incredible.  Despite the tough times and hard work, I would do it all again.  And I think this time in our life will be a good springboard for instilling these two character traits in our daughter

What business tip would you give to mums thinking of starting out alone?

I feel as though I am still relatively new to the realm of small business and blogging.  However, I think the same business principles apply whether your are working for a big corporate or going out on your own.  So my advice would be to:
  • Work hard but smartly
  • Be kind (and don’t burn any bridges!)
  • Know your goals and what you are working towards
  • Don’t let people take advantage of you
Starting your own business takes a lot of time, effort and energy.  I don’t think you ever really ‘switch off’ at the end of the day or when you have some down time.  So I think it is really important that you are passionate about your business venture and that you have a clear vision.

What’s does your ‘mum uniform’ comprise of?

It really depends on what day of the week it is and what I need to do for the day.  When I am doing the nursery run or have a Pilates class, you will always find me in leggings and a jumper.  But I mostly love to dress up a bit!  So in winter you will see me in dresses or skirts with tights and boots.  And in summer – lots of dresses, either with sandals or trainers.
